There was me, my sisters, my cousins, our wonderful Grandpa, and Bernice.

At a modest 93 years of age, grandpa was taking us all into the big city to see some classical music. He was in smart clothes (as always), and of course, Bernice had dressed up for the occasion too.

Though the route was long and packed, we all took the tube together. From Golders Green to South Kensington, no one on that carriage had seen London change as much as our dear Grandpa.

When we got to the grand Royal Albert Hall, we became tiny characters in the huge, cavernous space. I think we listened to Beethoven Symphony No. 9, and by some strange coincidence a friend of mine was on the stage singing with the London Philharmonic Choir. I think that Grandpa was pleased to share an important part of his life with some of the important people in his life, us.

For me, music is an essential part of my journey. It accompanies me in times of happiness and those which are tough. I can only imagine that for Grandpa it was the same.

…Every New Year for many years, Grandpa used to go to the Royal Festival Hall to welcome in another year with the classics…

…When Grandpa had lunch by himself, he would sometimes stick on a record or a tape and let the musical notes wash over his modest meal…

…When my dad was with him in hospital in those final days, classical music was (I hope) taking him to another astral plane, one of peace and calm…

A few weeks ago, my sisters and I flipped through the many records in Grandpa’s flat and kept a few that took our fancy. Like music, Grandpa has always been a constant in my life. He has been my role model – showing me the value of learning and curiosity, joy in reading, being open to all people and views, and gaining respect by always showing incredible respect.

As I continue my journey without Grandpa, I will always be grateful for the many years he was in our lives, and lovely memories together, including our special day out to the Royal Albert Hall.
